Who we are

Unplug AI (UPAI) is a UK-based grassroots campaign group that is calling for regulation and a total moratorium on AI, to protect humans, whoever and wherever they are.

Why we exist

Right now, we are living in the Wild West. AI is increasing at an astounding rate and the government is unwilling or unable to keep up with regulation as it is advancing this quickly. We believe that the only sensible course of action is to implement a total moratorium on AI, whilst we research its effects.

In order to prevent the existential threat that AI poses to human life, countries across the world must work together to create an international treaty to achieve a moratorium on AI development. In the meantime, the UK can and should block AI usage by the UK public and corporations in order to mitigate socio-economic problems perpetuated by AI.

What we campaign on

AI is one of the most wide-ranging issues that we face right now. From destroying the planet to taking British jobs to undermining women’s safety, there isn’t a single issue that AI leaves untouched. Currently, we are prioritising the following campaign areas:

No Prompts on a Dead Planet (Environment)

No Kill Switch (Autonomous Weapons)

Stop the Spin Machines (Propaganda and Disinformation)

The Doomsday Machine (Existential Threats)

We will also be launching campaigns in the near future on justice, the mental impacts of AI, gender, art, employment, medicine, and privacy.

How we campaign

We work to pressure the UK government to implement legislation that will regulate AI, curtailing its worst effects. This includes hosting talks, disseminating briefings and informing MPs and peers of the dangers of AI.

On a wider scale, we engage with international institutions and call on countries to push for an international treaty on AI, including setting up an international independent AI watchdog.

We also work to increase public awareness of the dangers of AI through advocacy work, including petitions, information sharing and organising.
